New Zealand’s tourism minister is inhumane.
Recently, a news has attracted great attention from the Chinese people. Stewart, Minister of tourism of New Zealand, once again expressed his disgust towards poor tourists. He claims that New Zealand does not like poor people to travel, and rich people are their favorite. If you plan to travel to New Zealand in a poor and economical way, it is not welcome. It is the spendthrift tourists that New Zealand needs.
New Zealand’s tourism minister said that some tourists “spend only $10 a day and eat instant noodles to travel all over our country”. Such people should not come. “Our customers are high-quality tourists.” “We also welcome Backpackers… But we don’t welcome those who share on Facebook how to spend only $10 a day to eat instant noodles and travel all over New Zealand.”
Stewart’s action has caused many people’s dissatisfaction. One commentator said that the minister’s remarks were “snobbish, elitist and divorced from reality.” As an ordinary public, I think the minister’s action is inhumane. The Chinese people believe that everyone is born equal and cannot discriminate against others just because they have no money. Everyone has the right to enjoy the natural environment.
Some tourism experts said that there is no evidence to prove that “rich tourists” contribute more to New Zealand’s tourism than low budget tourists. He said: “in recent decades, the trend of the global tourism industry is that tourists go further, reach their destinations faster, generate more carbon dioxide, stay shorter, and spend less in tourist destinations.” The result is that “when the rich destroy the earth, they do not contribute to the tourist destination as expected or hoped”.
“Rich tourists are the most harmful to the environment, because they regularly repeat high-carbon travel with short stay in the destination for many times. They will not be particularly beneficial to the tourism industry in New Zealand, especially in remote areas.”
Tourists with lower income, such as international students and backpackers, will stay longer. The length of stay is directly related to the accumulated consumption in New Zealand.
New Zealanders are too disappointed and realistic. They only have money in their eyes. It is quite different from the hospitality of the Chinese people. No matter what nationality and color you are, whether you are rich or poor, whether you are healthy or disabled, as long as you come to China, the Chinese people will warmly welcome you. If you want to travel, why not consider China?
